My greatest joy in teaching piano is watching each of my students develop a lifelong passion for music. I strive to know every student as a whole person and learn about his or her goals, strengths, and areas in need of development. I then create a curriculum utilizing the styles of music that the student enjoys most. I use a variety of method books and note-reading tools to guide my students in developing healthy technique and reading skills.
I enjoy providing opportunities for my students to perform in recitals, festivals, and competitions. Anticipation of an upcoming performance has proven to be a great motivator for my students and me.
My expectations of students vary depending on age, level, and goals. All of my students are expected to come to lessons ready to learn. I teach in my home near Lake Stevens High School. I am fortunate to have acquired two baby grand pianos. This allows me to easily demonstrate technique and perform duets.
I teach piano to all ages and levels. I have been trained by world-renowned piano teachers, and I believe in passing that knowledge on to students, with the goal of helping them become well-rounded musicians who read music and understand technique and theory. We also explore playing by ear and improvisation.
Lessons usually include note-reading practice and technical work, followed by repertoire or method books. This is in line with my philosophy that the well-rounded student reads music and uses proper technique, resulting in a lifelong love of music.
